Peter Tappern 1944~2017

Big Band Swing were very fortunate to not only have a great Jazz Trumpeter in the section, but also a very talented musical arranger.

Peter joined us in 2009, bringing with him talents we welcomed with open arms and he was keen to soon get us trying new big band arrangements he had put together.  Working with the players “tweaks” were made when either he or the band weren’t happy with elements or even keys, we had a truly wonderful working relationship.

We proudly have numerous arrangements of Peter’s in our library now and guaranteed, every function we play, at least two of his are included in the set.

We were fortunate to be asked to open the Bond film “Spectre” in 2014 at the Odeon cinema and Peter arranged all the Bond charts we played on that night, sadly there are only 2 videos of the evening, one of which is incomplete.

On many occasions Peter would ask us to try arrangements he had done with us as a band in mind, two of these were Lament for Lester & The Look Of Love.

Lament For Lester – arr. Peter Tappern.
Tenor – Katy Rimmer

The Look Of Love – arr. Peter Tappern.

Vocals – Jackie Highe, Flute – Rachel Kelly, Trombone – Dave Steptoe

Before Peter became too ill to travel we welcomed him at one of our charity concerts where on that evening the above two tracks were recorded and we played numerous other arrangements of his.

He was a very talented musician and a dear friend who will be missed by many, but he will live on through his legacy of music arrangements.

God Bless Peter.
